Seeing RED @ Peak Pride

Peak Pride @ RED Mountain Resort is the first LGBT2Q+ Pride event of 2020 – and in the whole, wide world!

Imagine standing on the main street of a small, mountainside town. It’s a mid-winter’s day and huge, fluffy snowflakes are quietly drifting from the heavens above. The street is lined with charming late 19th-century brick buildings, the rooftops capped with a hefty layer of snow that grows heavier by the minute. You look beyond the rooftops and see an ocean of seemingly endless blue-and-white mountain peaks, gently rising and falling like waves.

Those who pass by on the street offer genuine, friendly nods and smiles; they are of various ages, shapes, sizes, and genders and yet all seem eternally youthful, like Tolkein’s wood elves from The Lord of the Rings. You begin to wonder if you’ve been magically transported inside a snowglobe…when suddenly remember that you made the wise choice to attend Peak Pride @ RED Mountain Resort in Rossland, BC from January 2-5, 2020.

THE DEETS: ROSSLAND & RED MOUNTAIN RESORT

Located in the West Kootenay Region in the Southern Interior of BC, Rossland began as a mining town like many of the other communities in the area. The community grew rapidly thanks to a gold rush in 1897, propelling Rossland to the lofty status as one of Western Canada’s largest cities at the time. Now a ‘compact and sporty’ home to approx. 3,700 full time residents, the architecture of the day persists, lending to the charming Christmas village-like atmosphere. Known for its picturesque mountain setting, Rossland is especially idyllic in winter with RED Mountain Resort becoming the main hub of activity and truly the beating heart of the region.

RED Mountain Resort has the well-earned reputation for some of the best alpine and cross-country skiing in British Columbia. The fiercely independent RED Mountain Resort is the first stop along Canada’s “Powder Highway”, with a sprawling 3,850 acres of terrain to explore between three peaks on Red, Granite, and Grey Mountains. Mount Kirkup is right next door and is accessible from RED for eager powder hounds via Kirkup Cat Skiing. Despite its sprawling size (ranking among the Top 10 in North America), RED presents a small mountain feel in a pristine mountain environment, with almost non-existent lift lines, friendly locals, and a variety of skiable terrain for all skill levels.

OH YES SHE DID…

When presented with the opportunity to bring Peak Pride to RED Mountain, we jumped at the chance. Peak Pride @ RED will not only be the first LGBTQ2+ pride event of a new decade, but it’s also the first 2020 pride event in the entire world. With plenty of winter sport, food and drink, colour, dancing, and drag queens to go around, Peak Pride is the world’s largest and freshest collection of winter pride events, offering community-focused activities and entertainment in an array of inclusive spaces.

FEEL THE LOVE…

Thanks to the enthusiastic support of RED Mountain Resort, Tourism Rossland, Red Mountain Resort Lodging, The Josie Hotel, TheHomoculture.com, and viaSport (and seemingly the whole city of Rossland), we feel so grateful to have been welcomed to the Kootenays with open arms. On a recent visit to Rossland, we learned that “the buzz around town” is that the local business community is incredibly excited about Peak Pride, with many shops planning to display pride flags or decorating front windows with inclusive pride colours. Not that this comes as a surprise: the Kootenays tend to have a reputation for adopting a “live and let live” mindset. Regardless, we are feeling the love and are thankful for it!
